Summary
Jack is a young and carefree boy, long known to be strange in quiet, unexplainable ways. Orphaned early in life, he is taken in by his foster father, Mister Calcagno, a humble woodcarver whose hands are skilled but whose heart, to Jack, seems ever distant. Though he is given food, shelter, and kindness, Jack yearns deeply for Mister Calcagno’s notice and approval, wishing to be seen as more than a troublesome child with wandering feet.
His truest comfort comes in the company of Paoli, the baker’s daughter and his dearest friend, who knows his laughter as well as his silences. Yet when whispers of a traveling circus reach the town, Jack is tempted by the promise of belonging. Eager to prove his worth and to be admired at last, he makes a reckless choice and runs away with the circus, unaware that wonder often hides its cruelties behind bright banners and applause.

"His attachment isn’t like Ragatha’s with her sugar sweet words and constant check-ins. It isn’t like Zooble’s occasionally soft-spoken words that didn’t match up with their usual gruff off-putting demeanor. No, Jax’s attachment was something less obvious, but extremely meaningful to the lavender hare. It’s eyes constantly being on her, taking notice of every small thing from her expressive face to her nervous pulling at the pompoms decorating her outfit. It’s his poking and prodding at her body to see all of what it can do. It’s his ears constantly being trained to her voice, the small changes in her tones from the various stimuli that the circus provides. "

What were the stages of grief again?
Denial, Jax remembers. He knows that one. It’s the first on the list, the one that clues people in that it’s developing grief in the first place. Not that he’s grieving. That was silly. And a straight up delusional take on his situation. He doesn’t grieve.
Cartoonish purple rabbits don’t grieve.
The dead can’t speak, the guilty don’t deserve to. Pomni has Thoughts™ and makes it Jax’s whole problem.
