“You weren’t meant to be born,” Ichirou said quietly, his eyes locked onto hers, dark pools filled with both love and sorrow. “Our father… he only wanted one son. A single heir to carry on the family name, to shoulder the empire he built. When our mother became pregnant again, with twins…” He hesitated, his hands tightening into fists on his lap. “He was furious when he found out one of the twins was a girl. Furious that his bloodline would be ‘tainted’ by a daughter.”
Kiyoko sat frozen, her young mind struggling to process the words. Her stomach twisted, and a strange, heavy ache settled in her chest. She had always felt like an outsider in her own family, a ghost moving through a world that was never meant for her. But hearing it, truly hearing it, made the air in the room feel thick, suffocating.
But Ichirou wasn’t finished.
