Really too many people called Ilya an asshole when Shane was just as bad, or worse. Shane just hid it better, because Canada’s perfect golden boy could do no wrong.
Ilya moved to cross his arms over his chest and lean back against the headboard, hating how it put even more space between them, but not being able to let Shane think he was right.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Sure you don't, baby.”
Ilya was definitely not starting to turn the slightest shade of red.

Ilya realized that he had two choices, and neither of them was very good. He could let his teammates believe he was a controlling asshole of a husband, or he could talk to them about things that Shane would probably prefer to keep to himself. He knew how private his husband was, how much time he’d spent cultivating a very particular image of himself to the world. An image of himself that only Ilya and a few other people were ever able to see behind.

“Contract’s fine, as long as you’re comfortable with being the breadwinner.” Shane slumps under Ilya’s talented hands.
“I can do that,” Ilya says, “you can be trophy husband. Only have to sit around and look pretty. You are already very good at it.”
Shane snorts. “I’m not becoming a WAG, Ilya. I still have to play.” He sighs, rolling his head on his neck.
“So what is it then?” Ilya asks.
Shane taps the note on top of the stack of paper. “I’m going to have to change my jersey number.”
