She’s sitting on a rock when she sees him.
A boy, no older than she is, with hair as white as hers is black. He’s standing off to the side of the little bridge that crosses the smaller section of the water, with a fierce expression too old for his youthful face.
It isn’t until he turns and faces her that she realizes she’s been studying him far longer than what her mother and sister would say is polite. Nevertheless, she holds her gaze steady as she stares back into his eyes. Karin was never one to spook easily, and especially not because of some boy. No matter how icy his stare is, and despite the shiver that runs down her spine.
