However, somehow the god of anemo survived, waking up in an unfamiliar forest with no idea how long he has slept.

In Diluc’s defense, he didn’t know Fatui had access to time travel.
It is all he and Jean can depend on – make their way to Mondstadt in this time period, and pray that Venti in this time knows how to send them back.
That, of course, does not happen.
Instead of a cheerful, all-knowing Venti, they find an overworked, paranoid Barbatos who is struggling to juggle a nation, a people and a seat among the Seven all at once.
