Summary
Mike rushes the next part, afraid of the silence. “I know I’m not impressive. I know I’m a mess. I barely have my life together and you—” He gestures helplessly. “You’re here. You’re brilliant. You’ve built something real. You’re this bright, impossible thing.” His voice drops. “And maybe you don’t need me anymore.”
Will opens his mouth, but Mike barrels on, panic flaring.
“I know this is selfish. I know it’s a terrible thing to want. But I keep thinking about how much I needed you back then. How much it mattered that you saw me.” His eyes shine. His breath stutters. “And I want that again,” he says, broken. “I want you to need me again. I want to matter to you again.”
OR:: It’s 1997. After Jonathan tells Mike the truth about Will’s painting, Mike calls Will. A phone call leads to a conversation, where truths surface and something inevitable has the chance to begin.

Summary
“So he is just… in my life,” Mike said with disgust as he noticed how pathetic the weight on his chest felt. “In my house. Using my face. With Will.”
The cleric’s expression tightened. “Your friend.”
“My best friend,” Mike corrected too sharply. The moment the words left him, the flare of jealousy turned into embarrassment. He couldn’t remember when he grew to hate how he sounded when the subject was Will.
William’s gaze held steady. “Do you not want him there because you fear for your friend, or because you fear what your friend might feel?”
Mike’s mouth opened, then closed. The question hit too close to the thing he’d been circling for years without touching.OR: Mike wakes up in a paladin’s body, face-to-face with a cleric who looks exactly like Will, except this Will speaks in oaths and shows him a kind of affection he doesn’t feel he deserves.
Back home, someone else is wearing Mike’s skin, saying the things Mike has never dared to say out loud.

Summary
“Can I show you something?” Will asks, suddenly.
“Anything!” Mike responds.
“Okay, just trust me. We have to go.”
As they stand, Mike asks, “where are we going?”
“My place.” Will says as he settles his jacket over his arms.
Mike’s hand stills as he reaches for his jacket, his eyes snapping up to meet Will’s. Will’s eyes soften while holding his gaze, before gently nodding in encouragement. Mike’s lips part into a gentle smile before grabbing his jacket and standing fully to follow Will out of the diner.

Summary
“You’re not coming this summer. I haven’t seen you in a year and a half and I know it’s-it’s pathetic—“
“It’s not pathetic,” Will interjects quickly, shaking his head, “It’s not—“
“It is, Will,” he hears Mike’s voice break over another hitched breath, “I know you’re… I just want you to be happy. I never want you to come back to Hawkins, but I’m fucking selfish. I’m so selfish, and I’m sorry.”
Will lets the tears spill over and he lets that want that’s always itching under his skin show itself.
“My whole life I’ve missed you every second you’ve been away from me,” Will confesses quietly into the receiver.
If you’re pathetic, I’m wretched.

Not long after the final battle, Mike and Will were inseparable– until Will moved out to New York.
Despite the weekly calls and the freedom of living their lives without terror, there’s no world in which they could last so long apart without it feeling like torture.
Will gets a call, and three days later, Mike is at his doorstep.
It only takes a day for them to fall back together again.

Deliciously messy (affectionate) obsessive touching and yet touch starved byler with a perfect endgame and very sexy final chapter (re read). Possessive codependent behavior in the best of ways. Stunning weeping in the shower scene. Memorable!! Reread!!

Summary
William got to his feet and turned around, prayer book clutched to his chest. Michael was standing in the center of the chapel, obviously just come from sparring practice. He was still wearing his dented cuirass, a leather pauldron on his right shoulder. The moonlight through the stained-glass windows painted him in blue and gold.
“Forgot to leave your armor behind in the gymnasium?” asked William lightly, skirting around him to set the prayer book back in its tabernacle.
“Something like that,” said Michael. He stepped out of the shaft of light, joining William at the perimeter of the circular room.
William closed the ornate wooden door of the tabernacle and turned to face him. “How did you know I’d be here?”
“I know you,” Michael said simply. I love you, he might as well have said, for the way it sent William’s heart skittering inside his chest.
Michael has been betrothed to the princess since their infancy. But it’s her brother he really wants.

Summary
There was a buzzing sound, and a beep, before the same words sounded again:
“—all me back. I miss hearing your voice. I miss you.”
Another buzz, then again: “—still here… anyway, call me back. I miss hearing your voice. I miss you.”
Joyce realised with a terrible lurch to her heart that Will hadn’t called Mike. He wasn’t finally speaking to him again—it was a cassette tape. A cassette tape of Mike’s voice, a recording from what must’ve been the end of a missed phone call, and he was replaying Mike’s last sentence over and over. I miss hearing your voice. I miss you.
When Joyce first saw Mike at five years old—a sweet, caring little thing, jumping to Will’s aid without a second thought—she’d never thought it would end up like this.
