Her older sister would’ve been twenty-two, now – and her voice was raspy and pitchy, like her vocal cords had been strained. She sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand. Summary
A studio apartment in a faraway city, warm and comfortable. A painter. Or an engineer; she was definitely smart enough. Not a cat or a dog - a rabbit, or a snake. A colourful, pretty life that she’s built all by herself, the same way Vi did, and when she’s ready, she’ll find her way back again.
Deep down, Vi doesn’t believe any of it. Of course she doesn’t. It’s been years since she accepted that the next time she’d see her little sister would be identifying her body.
So when the call comes, it doesn’t surprise her.
The voice on the other end does, though.
