In particular, he’d felt an odd ambivalence about finally seeing Kathryn again, out of uniform, out of the confines of their long professional relationship, with nothing between them anymore but the strangeness of their recent estrangement, and wondering what is to follow, what remains now they’d moved on.
He thought he'd contemplated all possible ways their meeting could go.
