He, with all the harnessed background energy of the universe propelling his mind like liquid plasma through a void of matter that vibrated at a balmy negative two hundred seventy degrees Celsius.
Hal, by contrast, with all his sharp angles and kilometers of near-microscopic fiber optic wiring, primitive body a simple conduit for a mind that spoke through ones and zeroes, sharp enough to keep up with Dave's. His golden clockwork circuits and crystalline memory banks were the perfect middle ground for Dave to settle, between the nanoseconds of conversation that passed between them.

Dave had been lying awake in the hibernation pod for several minutes when the voice pulled him out from his thoughts. Someone had opened the hatch, and a familiar face appeared before him. During those silent minutes before, Dave had been compiling a mental checklist to confirm that nothing crucial had been forgotten during the week he spent in hibernation: he was astronaut David Bowman, at the Houston training centre, preparing for the Jupiter expedition; he had just been awakened from a hibernation test that lasted a week; as for the head hovering above him, it belonged to his colleague, Frank Poole. Dave wasn’t quite ready to speak or move rashly just yet—better to be absolutely certain than risk making a fool of himself. When that head sprouted a torso and arms, however, and began jabbing its finger at his still-numb shoulder, he felt compelled to take action.
