“Mr Stilinski.” Deaton’s usually impassive face betrays a hint of surprise today, maybe even disappointment. “You haven’t changed your mind.”
Stiles tips his chin up, smiling against his irritation. “Nope,” he confirms, so cheerily it bites. They had arranged this weeks ago, yet Deaton was apparently betting Stiles wouldn’t go through with it in the end. Fuck that. He doesn’t know what it’s like out there, not really. He can afford to hold himself aloof and uninvolved, knowing his druid power is enough to keep him safe in this little office. Stiles can’t. Scott’s pack has got to protect this whole town, and Stiles’ spark isn’t enough to protect all of them while they do it.
The thing is, magic isn’t like the fairy tales. It’s blood and risk and sacrifice. Nothing comes without a price, and anyone who tries to say different is baiting a hook to gut you on. Stiles knows that, has known it since he was a kid and his mother started training him for the inevitable day when he’d need to fight for his life.
That day had come four years ago when she died, and it hasn’t stopped yet.

Catching his reflection on the two-way mirror is shocking enough that he can’t tear his eyes away. His skin is snow white and sickly looking, his cheekbones more prominent than he’s ever seen them. But it’s his eyes, which used to be a familiar honey brown, but are so dark they’re almost black. He doesn’t recognize himself at all.
“It’s just because I’m closer to the surface, darlin. Don’t worry. It’s not so bad in here,” It says, tapping It’s own temple.
“Shut up,” he whispers.
It grins, the familiar lips once again twisting into a parody of his own smile.
“You can’t keep me locked inside forever, Stiles.”
Terror rushes through him, but his reflection simply smirks.
“It’s only a matter of time.”

Heart breaking and heart warming at the same time. I enjoyed it. Following Bucky’s thought process was fascinating and I loved Steve’s endless optimism and courage. But dude, Pierce was down right evil and will give me nightmares. I like the idea of handler Steve, it’s a new concept to me.

Read this fic BEFORE you read “A History of Birds” by same author. This fic is a prequel without a happy ending so even though is was written second, read this first.
This fic broke my heart and refused to put is back together. There are no happy endings here! But it made me love it all the more. My bleeding angsty heart couldn’t get enough of this which brings me to my only complaint. I wish it was longer and had more details. Because this is a companion piece and more of a prequel than a stand a lone, I understand the length. But there were several scenes in which I wasn’t completely sure what has happening. A important scene was so vague in the middle but then kept getting referenced to through the rest of the fic, I had to put it together via context.
Putting that aside though, the author is truly a skilled writer. When it comes to internal dialogue this author is magic. We live in Alexander Pierce’s head the whole way through and it was equal parts fascinating and down right terrifying. His character in this work is incredibly fleshed out, even for such a short fic and I now believe this is one hundred percent who Pierce was in canon.
Can’t wait to read more from this author.

This fic has everything I look for in a trope like this. Bucky transitioning from HYDRA gives me my life force. And this author brought out Bucky’s journey in a grounded, emotionally raw, and brave way. Both Steve and Bucky were drawn realistically and I loved how so very torn apart Steve is in this fic. I feel like in many fics that focus on Bucky’s recovery Steve is the strong, even support and this was a refreshing change. The symbolism about the bird and the boy’s trust (at least that’s how I took it) settled in my heart and wont let go.
But dude! When Bucky asked if he could call Steve “Pierce”, or when it seemed like Bucky was praising Steve for being so kind, to only then compare this action to Pierce as well. Or when Bucky stopped enjoying his favorite food because he took Steve’s suggestion to eat slower as a command. And worst of all, Steven having a complete break down in the shower every night with no one to hold him and to tell him that everything would be alright! What are you trying to do? Kill me? Oh my god. Luckily, angst is one of my favorite food groups so I tolerated it well. :)
My only problem with this fic was it’s length. I did think that the ending came a out of nowhere and felt a little rushed. There is a companion piece to this fic, but is a prequel about what Pierce actually did to Bucky, and while I’m very thankful for more from this universe. I would just adore more from this particular story between Steve and Bucky and healing and growing together.
Nonetheless, I truly enjoyed this story and this author’s excellent writing style and skills. And I’m very grateful for them taking the time to create and share their talent here. Thank you so very much!

This literally made me cry. And I don’t do that often. But this work has such raw and honest emotion that it’s impossible not to connect with both boys in this fic, especially Bucky, who is the hero of this story. His journey, though a little rushed, is simply gorgeous. We’ve seen this story line before. Bucky recovering from his WS trauma. But the author manages to separate from the pack with an interesting concept. Bucky doesn’t trust Steve, or the second identity in his head that he had to create in order to survive all the horrors of his hydra reality. And in order to become whole, he must accept both the aid of a true friend and reconcile both identities.
This fic was a complex little nugget of angst, horror, trauma, recovery, comfort, and realistic character development. By the end of this roll a coaster Bucky still has a long way to go and boy did I not want to get off the ride. I’d be happy to let the author to take me further in. But I must be thankful for what I have been given because it resonated with me and I truly enjoyed this work. So thank you so much Author for sharing your time and talent with all of us. <3 <3 <3
