There was no world in which Tim Bradford hadn’t loved Isabel Holloway.

He could still feel her hands on his face — every kiss aching with things left unsaid.

She could still smell him in the old shirts she tucked away: peppermint and cedarwood, motor oil, garlic and burnt toast from mornings he forgot the pan while watching her like she was everything.
"He looked at me like I was something worth believing in, and I hated him for it — because I could never look in the mirror and see what he saw. I couldn’t bare the thought of failing him."
She remembered how he stood in doorways like he was holding up the sky.

“It’s a way to put complicated people into neat little boxes so they feel less crazy,” Tim said flatly. “Doesn’t mean it fixes anything.”
Lucy stared at him. Touch as a love language, her therapist had said. Your nervous system doesn’t just want it—it regulates through it. And Tim? He was the human embodiment of a no-touch sign in a museum.
“I’ll even make you a deal.” She extended a hand, palm up. “I stop talking—any time, no questions asked—for the rest of rookie year. All you have to do is touch me. Hand on mine. Shoulder tap. Whatever. Skin-to-skin. You initiate, I shut up.”
He eyed her hand like it might bite. “And you’ll actually go quiet? Just from a tap?”
“Skin-to-skin,” she said. “Intentional. Consent required. We’re not animals.”
He made a face. “Feels manipulative.”
“You literally just said touch doesn’t fix anything. This should be easy for you, then.”
His brow furrowed. “What if I don’t want to touch you?”
Lucy tilted her head. “Then don’t. But if you ever do, you’ll know you’ve got the off-switch.”
