The Thirteenth: Midnight
It suddenly occurred to Viktor that if he went missing,
There would be very little done about it.
Not until the next morn. Not when it was easy to feign Viktor retiring early and could not be disrupted. Not when the house swallowed voices and only mirrored them as faint murmurs in the dark. Not when by sunrise, Viktor would be long gone, into the woods that none knew; into the house that caged and killed his last kin;
Into the cold mercy of a madman.
He could not run.
He could hardly fight back.

Or,Viktor receives a letter informing him of the death of a distant family member and the inheritance left to him.
Jayce drags their friends along to make sure Viktor doesn't get possessed/killed/bodysnatched in the process of attaining homeownership.

Summary
They have a shorthand now. He doesn’t even have to ask with words. He just sags into Jayce’s touch, letting his head rest against the warmth of his stomach, and Jayce says, “D’you wanna go in the back?”
He does. Because it just so happens that there is one specific thing that cuts through the pain when nothing else will. And when he asks, Jayce always says yes.

Summary
On the eve of their first Distinguished Innovators Competition, Jayce and Viktor deal with their nerves by kissing and, subsequently, falling into bed together. Never truly speaking about it, they both form completely different opinions on the night’s events and keep sleeping together. Jayce thinks they are dating and taking things slow. Viktor thinks they are friends with benefits and that Jayce could never want more.
And so it goes, until one gala, when everything reaches a turning point.

Summary
There’s a sink hole growing in their home. Gradual, slow, all consuming.
He can’t pinpoint its exact origin, no matter how much time he spends examining it; rummaging through his memory, picking apart moments and making organized lists of their meticulous details.
He can, however, track its movement. Akin to how a meteorologist would track a hurricane. When Jayce cancels plans in favor of working, it swallows a car. When he finds Jayce asleep at his desk, or on the couch, academic notes sprawling and crinkled around him like some biochemical-engineering tornado — a building. Failing to do laundry and take out trash after Viktor reminds him. A tree, a truck, a home.
Jayce and Viktor are engaged. At least, Viktor thinks they are.
