It felt humbling to realize that he’d gotten too comfortable with the idea of spending almost every night at Roy’s, talking, debating, cooking together—it was a domestic life they cultivated, and one Ed took for granted all too soon. Roy would go back to Ishval whether Ed was ready or not.
He warned his students against that often. If something can be had, it must also have the potential to be sacrificed, he told them with a thickness in his throat. If you cannot live without it, that’s what will be taken from you first.
That is equivalent exchange at its core.
Ed is a professor and Roy is a hero; they try to make it work.

“Me,” Roy agreed, giving Edward a small smile.
“Since when have you had fucking tattoos?”
“I started back when I was in the academy,” Roy explained, holding out one arm for Edward’s perusal.
“Cool,” Edward breathed, and then he blinked again. He did his best to scowl, but the way his gaze darted back down to Roy’s forearms said volumes. “Which is so out of character for you, old man.”
“Since I've had them for years, does that not mean that I’ve been ‘cool’ this entire time, and you merely didn’t know due to our professional relationship?” Roy purred, stepping closer.
“No,” Edward replied, but it wasn’t said with any conviction. His gaze had lowered again, and this time he reached out with a hand to trace the line of Roy's tattoos, the chemical equation for coffee as it trailed up his forearm. His hand then moved, the rough pads of his fingertips skimming against the jut of Roy’s hip bones, exposed by the low hanging pants. Ed brushed a finger through the top of Roy’s happy trail, his touch warm and barely there, and Roy sucked a breath in, startlingly affected by the simple touch.
