They walk away from everything and everyone. It's not really a choice, even though she phrased it as such. 'You can right the wrongs in the world for me, little kitsunebi, or I can take from you what you stole; it's your choice.'
'Death or servitude. Not a big choice there,' he mutters angrily. He didn't survive living on a Hellmouth just to die now. He tugs the leather jacket closer and breaths in deeply to anchor himself. The irony of the act is not lost on him.
'If I do this,' he hedges, watching as the color drains from his father's face. 'Then I expect something in return. Something a Goddess of Life and Death should be able to give me.'
Izanami settles back within the uncomfortable hospital chair and smiles with a mouth full of fangs. 'A life for a life...interesting. Very well, little foxfire,' she croons. 'We have a deal.'

Summary
The mage sits alone, watching the stars glitter above and the world below bathe in the soft moon light and sighs, wistfully. She has neither friends nor enemies, for she must maintain the balance of the world. She sort of hates the balance though, and wonders what would happen, should she step-down from this lonely vigil and take up the sword and shield to defend those she might one day call family.
Then remembers that she doesn't have one, closes her eyes, and weeps.

one future sought - one future fearedThe funnel of the sky stretches up to the heavens; an ominous tower of storms with but the hope and glimmer of light high above at the eye of turmoil. "Come to me, come with me," the voice of the Stormcrows whispers to him from nearby. "Let me guide you through." With anxious eyes, he gazes upwards, away, oblivious to the proffered guidance through the night of the soul. He clutches sheathed sword close for security, rather than grasping bright blade aloft to light the way!

"I would like a story," says the salamander to the Hierophant.
"And what would you like to hear, little one?" The words come slowly. Each syllable seems to be drawn from deep within, pulled up from an individual rootlet. The salamander is used to it, and patient.
"I want to hear how I may fly. I was content. And then one day friend Caterpillar said he was sleepy. He slept for a long time until I nearly forgot him. Until...yesterday a moth came to laugh at me. He laughed with Caterpillar's laugh, and with Caterpillar's voice he said he had had a dream of wings."
"Ah." The sonorous exhalation seems to go on forever. "Ah, little one; I am sorry. Caterpillar has that blessing. He may sleep and dream of flight. He weaves a silken ritual around his body, and then comes the day when that vision transforms him. You..."
"I wish to dream of flight too!" says Salamander very seriously.
"You may dream of it," says his friend and teacher, "I will not be the one to deny you divinity. But just know that your own divinity shall be attained along a different path than Caterpillar's. Do not relinquish your dream, Salamander."
