Summary
Joseph had always dreamt of flying—being regaled with stories as a kid of the incremental march towards flight, and the veritable explosion of flying machines that happened after, instilled in him a sense of wonder at the infinite world aloft. So, naturally, when the war in Europe broke out in ‘39, he took advantage of his father’s position in Britain’s Royal Air Force and hopped the first ocean liner to Southampton, eager to finally take to the skies.
But when he’s shot down over the Alps and finds himself beaten to hell and back with a guarded (and frankly grumpy) Italian pilot who claims to be just as stranded, he’s forced to work with the very enemy he’s been fighting for the past 12 months. Can they put aside their differences to survive the dead of winter and get back home?

Summary
Slade's a pretty common fixture in Dick's life, so it's not really a surprise when he hunts down the warehouse of a gang he's tracking and finds that Slade's been hired to protect it for the night. He's also definitely not about to back down just because of that, so he goes in anyway. He's not expecting to beat Slade, but he's not expecting the consequences of trying either, and even though Slade isn't a fan of torture, he'll do a lot as long as he's paid for it.

Dick’s mouth is dry. He doesn’t know why he’s so shocked. It isn’t like he didn’t know that Slade is a contract mercenary. A killer, to the fullest extent of the word. It’s just that—while Slade might have been the bane of his existence when he first struck out as Nightwing, recently…Dick can count more times that Slade’s helped him than hurt him. And he thought Slade was better than this.
