Summary
When he presses the button on the doorbell, he hears the digitally-produced ding-dong echo from inside. There is a tiny box halfway up the adjacent wall that immediately beeps and emits Shane’s voice.
“Hey, you can just leave it on the step, thanks.”
Ilya presses his nose into the digital doorbell, which he knows to also contain a camera, and says, “Shane.”
A pause.
“What the fuck.”
A brief cacophony of noise that Ilya can hear even from outside the house. The multiple successive thumps of something falling, Shane swearing loudly and the sound of what can only be a hockey game being paused on the television.
He opens the door to reveal that he is nap-rumpled, wearing two pairs of socks and carrying a child in his arms. The only really surprising part is that the socks don’t match, though the child is interesting.Ilya takes an impromptu trip to Montreal. There are unforeseen consequences.

Two months after the cottage, everything is finally falling into place. Ilya has a new house in Ottawa, ninety minutes from Shane's apartment. He has a new car — a ridiculous silver Porsche he can't wait to show off. He has a future with Shane that's closer than it's ever been.
"Ask me again," Ilya says that morning, when Shane mumbles "marry me" into his shoulder. "When you are awake. When you mean it. And I will say yes."
Shane plans to ask him properly. Tonight, maybe. Or at the cottage. On the dock, at sunset. He thinks about it the whole drive — the ring, the words, the life they're going to build together.
They take the back roads to Montreal. The scenic route along the river. It's a beautiful day.
Shane was going to ask Ilya to marry him.

Kind of how he eats David's chicken parm, engulfing two spoons in one bite, or like the squirrels bulging cheeks on the icy Saturday mornings they see on their morning walks.
He waited to see what happened, because something in his head told him that Ilya was about to show him something not of this world or the next. That's the thing with Ilya. Shane had watched him most of the time since they were rookies, and Ilya just did things that didn't really adhere to any norm, and Shane could just do nothing but watch.)

"Where did this come from?" Shane asks, eyes darting to the tail and back at the team.
"From behind you, man. It's attached to your butt," Haas says, still holding a (Shane's?) tail in his hand. It's black and furry. It's also ginormous; nothing like a regular cat tail. More like a cat tail made for a hockey player well over 200 pounds, 6 feet tall, all muscled. Custom.
Shane's head whips to Ilya — Ilya who is looking down at the tail, eyes dilated. He brings up a finger to stroke the black fur, petting it.
"Ilya." Ilya's head snaps up. "What the fuck did you do?"

Ilya accidentally turns Shane into a cat right before their first game against Montreal and Shane spirals.
