When he opened the door, his heart dropped. He’s been met with this sight countless times, yet it still affected him each time.
Chuuya hooked up to tubes, wires, and other medical equipment. His skin was as pale as snow. He had a very slim frame; his cheek bones were unnaturally prominent compared to most people and his body was frail. His skin was also cold to the touch, not a single ounce of warmth.
None of these things were as agonizing as one factor.
One cruel factor that never changed no matter how much time passed.

“Right,” Dazai said, nodding too fast. “No, Chuuya is right. It was silly of me.”
Chuuya’s mouth opened. Closed. He looked furious at the universe.
Dazai, very carefully, did not let his voice shake. “I’ll go.”
“Dazai—”
Dazai stepped back. His body felt far away. Like he was watching himself from the ceiling. Like he was moving through water.
He had, somewhere in his coat pocket, a folded piece of paper—a card he’d made because the etiquette guide said cards were traditional and because the idea of giving Chuuya something felt like leaving a small, secret piece of himself somewhere safer than his own skin.
He did not take it out.

Dazai leaned against the table with his best antagonizing smirk. “Hatrack. Fancy seeing you here! I’d recommend taking it easy on the wine, you’re small enough as it is without the added alcohol intake~”
He fully expected an argument the moment he opened his mouth, with sharp words and sharper teeth.
He braced for slurred insults, drunken bravado, maybe even a half-hearted attempt to punch him.
What he did not expect was for Chuuya to look up blearily, eyes lighting up almost immediately.
“Dazai?” Chuuya confirmed, smile spreading slowly. Deliberately. Genuinely. “Well. If it isn’t my favourite annoyance.”

Summary

For the longest time, the redhead thought that Dazai was a beta, plain and normal. It was only after a bad mission, where he got badly hurt, that Chuuya got close enough to feel the faint, sweet scent of the taller boy.

After a long day at work, all Chuuya really craved were a long bath and his soft, cotton sheets. Sadly, instead of peace and quiet, life served him a dead-eyed mackerel.
"Holy shit, you're burning up"
"Is Chuuya saying I'm hot?" Dazai asked, a cheeky smirk stretching his lips.
"No, I'm saying you're an idiot who got himself sick because he refuses to leave that fuckass container even when it's -15 degrees outside." Chuuya snapped, ignoring Dazai's petulant expression.
"Chuuya's being a silly puppy! It's always warmer outside when it's snowing here", Dazai said, his head swaying and falling back against the armrest. He gave Chuuya a loopy smile again, still stupid, still weirdly off. "It's probably like -3"
