"A taste," he says flatly. The word lands like a spark in dry brush—no hesitation, no shame, only a simmering edge of something dark and consuming.
You freeze in place. The air feels electric, like it's grown too thick to breathe."Do...you mean—"
"Yes." His voice was low, but certain, as if the question itself had been gnawing at him long before you asked it aloud. "To taste you."
Before you can even find your voice, Sylus reaches into the inner pocket of his coat and pulls out an envelope of cash, tossing it onto your nightstand with a quiet but deafening thud.

Summary
There is no distressing scene within her daughter’s room. No overturned furniture, no blood, no toddler under duress. In fact, Isobel looks quite content hugging a stuffed unicorn to her chest, perched on Beau’s lap in the white rocking chair Rey scored off of Facebook Marketplace.
Not Beau. A man. A stranger. A stranger in her apartment, holding her baby.
She finds shiny black hair where she expects dirty blond locks. A long nose and clean shaven cheeks placed where a wider nose and a scruffy beard should be. The man is much larger than her boyfriend of a year and a half; his hands dwarf Isobel and the copy of Where the Wild Things Are that he’s reading from. His rich baritone cuts off when his gaze meets Rey’s, and the corner of his full mouth tilts up in a lopsided grin.
Rey wants to scream, but the sound gets caught in her throat.
