Arthur nodded thoughtfully. If Merlin didn’t want him to know something, it was probably important.
“Gaius, huh,” he mused. “I don’t know a Gaius.” But even as he said it there was something buried way down below, prickling at his memory.
In which Arthur falls asleep, falls ill, and farms, and Merlin brings him home.

“Sire?” Merlin stutters, but when Arthur beckons him closer, he gets up and slowly walks forward. He looks a little cautious, but sweetly clueless, apparently not realising that it’s him who Arthur is going to kiss and not one of his knights. Arthur briefly feels sorry for what he’s going to do, but then again, Merlin is his best match. The younger boy might be scrawny and narrow-chested, but he’s neither repulsive, nor an arse, doesn’t have a scratchy beard nor bad breath - in fact, Arthur has it on good authority that Merlin’s breath always smells nice because he’s one of the cleanest people he ever met and chews peppermint leaves every morning. When Merlin first started working for Arthur, he had naively thought Arthur was straight. They worked in an LGBT support organization, but Merlin had given Arthur one look and thought ‘Gorgeous, but straight.’ Of course, he should have known that Annis would not have hired a straight man to head the department of networking. Arthur was more or less the face of the organization when it came to partnerships and sponsorships. Merlin had only made the discovery when he saw the sole personal picture on Arthur’s desk, a snapshot of a group of friends at Pride with Arthur smack in the middle: shirtless, chest painted with sparkling glitter, and a huge sign that read ‘Gay As Hell’ with rainbow flames around the lettering. At the time, it had seemed so out-of-character that Merlin had burst out laughing and immediately cherished this glitterized version of Arthur. Ever since, Merlin had cherished the bits and pieces of that version of Arthur whenever he let that side of him show.
