Summary
Hatake Kakashi is battered, bloodied, and running on fumes. Pursued by an enemy missing-nin, he stumbles across a Ninja Academy overnight field excursion, led by four instructors, including Iruka-sensei. Worried that the children might become the missing-nin's next victims, Kakashi makes the "wise" decision to accompany the field trip home, rather than hurry back to Konoha for the treatment of his critical injuries.
He's sure it will all turn out fine in the end. Iruka, on the other hand, might be a bit harder to convince.

He always thanked her in the mornings.) Flower crowns on his head when the snow began to melt, the delicate snowdrops intertwined by the girls. Susato and Iris’ smiles when he wore them.
It must be what a family is supposed to feel like.
