When the world stilled, it contained the awareness of a Russian forest, the sounds and smells of imprisoned men without hope, without possibility, of pine and coal and the cruelty of men.
And yet, all was overlaid with a London alley, the stench of the city in his nostrils and the texture of the brick beneath his fingers.
He froze, uncertain which was the dream, which the reality.
