“Oh, I get it,” Melanie says to her. “It all makes sense now! You know, for the record, I was completely wrong about you, too. Like, I thought you didn’t have a sense of humour: I could never get you to laugh, no matter what I did. You were just absolutely uncharmable.”

“Hey!” says Georgie, offended, and hits her clumsily across the arm, “Don’t be rude! I make you laugh all the time.”

“You do,” says Melanie, and she sounds buzzed and completely fond in a way that sets Georgie’s stomach rolling.

    Summary

Georgie makes an affirmative noise. "You go to a couple of events like this one — well," she scrunches up her nose, "maybe a little better than this one, and you start recognizing people and making connections. It's not a huge community, after all."

"I guess so. A lot of people seem to be in for the experience and then drop out when they find it disappointing," Melanie says and shrugs. "But it is a job, so."

At that, Georgie gives her an amused look. "Paranormal investigating? I mean, sure, but why not start a show about, I don’t know, gaming or literally anything else instead? Would be much easier."

"Too mainstream. I like a little challenge, getting into places where I'm not wanted and all that," she answers, solemn. It’s not a lie, though the truth is probably more complicated than what she’s figured out so far. What matters is that her response makes Georgie laugh and it's such a nice, warm sound, and Melanie thinks, pleased, I made her laugh.

    Summary

“I- I don’t want to fight, Melanie. Not right now, please.”

The words sounded unfamiliar coming from Jon’s mouth, desperate and despondent, and he hated the way his voice’s pitch increased in a pleading whine. He’d never sounded like that before, had he? Has he always been so… so pathetic? It was embarrassing and shameful, and painfully humiliating, and Jon had no idea when this innate terror at conflict began. He used to be assertive, he used to be strong, he used to be… well. He used to be a lot of things. Human, for one.

Melanie tilted her head to the side, and for a split second her face was scrunched in indignation, fists clenched by her sides so tight he could see the red crescent moon indents where her sharp nails met soft flesh. A sharp intake of breath, her shadowy eyes closing for a span of five seconds, and then her muscles relaxed and her eyelids snapped open.

“No, I.. I don’t see the point in arguing either. Not anymore.”
