He hadn’t realized that talking to her was something he’d gotten used to until his phone had gone silent following Friday’s adventure. She and her family had stopped by the house to pick up her stuff before heading home for dinner (“Pancakes,” she had said, as if that explained everything), but then…nothing. No random venmo requests. No digs at his Model UN skills. No vague references to what happened.
What did happen? Ben wonders. He’s still not really sure anything happened at all.

“So,” Devi says, placing a hand on her hip, “I noticed you were chumming it up with Stella. Did you at least manage to get some action?” She smirks. “And by that I obviously mean lips on lips.”
Ben lets out a laugh, and it warms Devi to her core, in a way that surprises her, but that is not at all unpleasant or unwelcome. Ben shakes his head. “Nah.” He cocks his head. “We just didn’t have chemistry in the end, you know? Wouldn’t want to waste my first kiss in a while on someone I don’t have any sort of connection with.” His voice drops quieter. “It should be special.”
Devi does her best to ignore the way her heart speeds up at his words, but it’s hard when Ben looks at her with his bold blue eyes that enrapture her completely.

“Wow, that’s really sad but really true,” Ben says, nodding, and tapping his fingers against the table, “we can insult each other, but, like… it has to be flirty. Heart eyes.”
“Ew, don’t say heart eyes,” Devi says, wrinkling her nose, “that's gross.”
“Fine, whatever, no heart eyes,” Ben says, “but we’ve gotta at least be able to fake some amount of attraction towards each other.”
