“That husband of yours, Ilya.” She begins, and Shane tenses out of habit. “He is Russian, correct?” Shane nods, eyebrows furrowed in confusion at the non sequitur. Marie just looks at him for a moment more, staring into his eyes. He flinches, glancing away from her heavy stare. She must find what she’s looking for, because she nods once to herself. She thrusts the book into Shane’s arms forcefully enough he stumbles back a step. “Keep it.”
“Wha?” Shane gapes at her for a moment in absolute shock before his brain comes back online. “But this is your favorite book?”
“Consider it a late wedding present.” She shrugs, before a little smirk crosses her face. “Besides, I have all my favorite recipes memorized anyway.” She winks at him, and he smiles, feeling like he's thirteen years old again and they’re sneaking extra dessert before bed.
