Why does George think they need to make awkward small talk on this random sidewalk? It’s very George of him, in fact one of the many George-Russell-isms that annoy Max. And actually, Max can answer that question: it’s because someone might observe them and George, above anything, is a performer who will die if he’s not performing.

Inviting Charles was not a decision Max took lightly. The fact he’s even having sexual urges towards someone is life changing in itself. He supposes that Charles doesn’t know how vulnerable he felt by even asking. It was stupid anyway, he should have waited for a more suitable time. Or perhaps not acted on his feelings at all. It stings to know now that Charles doesn’t look at him that way. Max doesn't blame Charles though, if the Dutchman knows one thing for sure it is that sexual attraction is not a fun thing to fake. That thought hardly soothes him, he finally found someone that he wants and they don’t want him back.
Or
Max has never had sexual feelings towards anyone before Charles. He is starting to think he has made a mistake by inviting the Monegasque to the winners room though.

“Why do you care, Charles?” Daniel asks, grinning.
“Well, because it’s obviously me, right?”
An honest-to-God squawk of indignation leaves Max’s lips at this question, the first sound he’s actually made throughout this entire discussion. “What do you mean ‘obviously’?” he demands, sitting forward.
“Well, no offence, mate, but you’re not exactly well-known for your success in dating,” Charles points out.
A low fire ignites behind Max’s eyes as he stares Charles down from across the table, lips pursed. “Just because I do not parade my partners around the paddock for the world to drool over does not mean I have any less success in dating than you, mate.” He bites out the last word like an insult.

Pierre once said that Charles is a good person with a monster inside of him. A rabid, hungry beast that craves attention, that may well be chained down and locked away in a dark corner, but is there, lingering, waiting for a moment of weakness where it can pounce, break the bars and rampage.
Charles tells Pierre that driving for Alpine has made him completely insane.
It’s not his fault he’s so perceptive, is what he argues. (Pierre just rolls his eyes again and tells Charles he’s a lost cause.) When people are literally falling all over themselves to be near him, to touch him, to worship him, of course he is going to notice it.
So, of course, he notices Max’s crush.

Charles shifts so that he can take Max’s head in his hands, pull their gazes together. Only when he’s sure Max won’t look away does he ask, “Is there anything I can do to help?”
“What do you mean?” Max mumbles, wishing his anger could survive in the face of Charles’ kindness, wishing he weren’t so hungry and selfish for just one loving touch.
“Well, the wine and television are not helping. Is there anything that will?” Charles rubs his thumbs over Max’s cheekbones like it’s little more than a domestic habit. “I meant it, chéri. I want to help.”
Max will blame it on the wine for the rose pink tinting the edges of his vision, for the wanting so obvious in the dip of his tongue: “Fuck me.”
