Jedediah is dead.
Octavius stands at the edge of Rome, watches the Mayan army retreat, sees them drag Jedediah’s broken body with them, and Jedediah is dead. He waits for a sign of life, holds his breath until it feels like his chest will explode.
He waits.
The two gunshots still ring in his ears.
And Jedediah is still dead.Jedediah’s not dead.
This is a surprise to everyone, especially himself.Ever since Jedediah and Octavius ended their yearslong feud, their relationship has been smooth sailing. But beneath the surface, forces are conspiring to tear them apart once again - this time, seemingly, for good.

It guides him softly to the floor, where the tile is ready to catch him as he collapses unsteadily to his knees. It does hurt to fall this way, but it doesn’t really matter – in fact, it’s almost grounding. At least the tiles here are stone and not the cold concrete of the Smithsonian building where—
