"Yes Arwen," Glorfindel told her drily. "It is of course inconceivable that Lord Elrond of Imladris — an elf so insufferably overcommitted to bureaucracy he once tried to implement and risk assess a regional policy for the baking of Lembas until Galadriel told him where he could shove his bread — might ever decide to stick around and micromanage the upbringing of his grandson."

Moments from a world in which Elrond stays to watch Eldarion grow up.

Ever since she’d been small, Hermione’s reward for good marks had been a rampage through a bookshop, so the day she tore open her O.W.L.s results and triumphantly brandished the eleven Outstandings, her beaming mother said, “We’ll go to Foyles tomorrow,” without any discussion required.

"The bird tilts its head and watches her with a terrible steadiness, and a thought takes root in her.

    Death has found me.

And in that terrible moment she is certain that she will fade.

Not die—dying is simple and fading is different, she has been told. It is to be so diminished by grief and terror and the slow, meticulous ruin of pain that you slip loose of yourself and cannot find your way back."

    ...

Celebrían is comforted during her ordeal.

    Summary

They were not what anyone would have asked for, he and Elros. The Sons of Elwing had been taken away in the night and returned something other – something alien and warped. And no matter what anyone said, Elrond knew they did not measure up to the lamblike paragons they had been made into in their absence, those emblems of saintly suffering.

It was easy to mourn the sweet, captive boy-princes cruelly snatched away by shadowy figures amidst the fire and rubble of their home, harder to reconcile those imagined martyrs with the men that returned, all flesh and blood and human frailty, flawed and changed, the enemy's tongue falling from their lips.

It has been three days. Three days of hiding, three days of cooling silence. The child knows her mother is dead.

The child is starting to believe it.

(Or, if you hear a song of grief and sorrow on the breeze, tell your neighbors. And do not forget to leave a gift upon the windowsill.)

(Or, a small party of refugees flees from Gil-Galad's war-camp to the Havens. Waylaid by an orc hunting-party not far from the beach, only a child is left alive.)

    Summary

Valinor was every bit as beautiful as the songs promised.

Its streets glittered with the dust of diamonds, gleaming under the radiant light of a sun that shone brighter, purer over the hallowed lands than it ever had over Middle-earth. The peaks of the Pelori, soaring and snowcapped, loomed pristine in the distance, mocking her with every glimpse. These were not mountains that had ever known the tread of an orc's foot, nor suffered spilt blood or harrowed screams. Even the sands of Eldamar were white and silken underfoot, nothing like the abrading grit of the beaches of Belfalas where her mother had once reigned.

    Celebrían hated it.

There is a hope that only exists in words spoken between Maedhros and Maglor and lives truly in neither of them. Children are vulnerable to injury and Mannish children are often ill. They know that much. These children, in particular, have proven to have a bent towards sickness already; they are swept up in the changing of the seasons. But it has never been serious before.

Only temporary. Only a mild poison, a brief convalescence, a quick return to health.

And yet the coughing goes on.

A few years after the third kinslaying, Elrond gets sick.

    Summary

Celebrimbor Tyelperinquar, once the youngest to be carried over the sea in the dark rocking hold of a ship where he was too afraid to look at the water, listens now to the sigh of waves on pebble shores beneath his window and lets the thought of it calm him. May Elwing hear him in whatever form she bears now, feathered spirit or finned ghost, and know he seeks to bring her children safely home. May Eärendil pause at the prow of his ship and believe once again that nothing is without hope.

After the Third Kinslaying and the sack of Sirion, Celebrimbor writes to his uncles.
