Summary
He shifts absently, limbs stretching towards a heat source that is no longer there. He frowns momentarily upon realizing the absence, and he wakes up a bit more. His exploratory search brings several unfortunate key details about his surroundings to the forefront of his mind.
The mattress he’s laying on dips oddly in the middle, like someone jumped on it too many times and cracked the wood of the bed frame beneath it. Said bed frame creaks with every movement, no matter how small. There is no top sheet, simply a comforter and a single sock that was kicked off during the night.
And yet he’s never been in a bed more comfortable than this. -

“Wow,” she pointed excitedly at the display in front of them. She grabbed one of the small bundles and held it up to him. “These look just like the chess pieces in Uncle Miles’ office.”
“Hey, you’re right…” Something was tickling in the back of his brain. Brewing.
“I’m always Wright!”
“Atta girl.” He took the package from her, slowly turning it in his hand. “I’m surprised they’re just selling them by the piece like that. How much traffic do you think chocolate chess gets?”
“There’s a set right there.”
“Yeah, but who would want to lug that around when you can just get a couple of… these.” Their eyes widened at the same time, and they turned to look at each other. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” -

“We’re back!” He heard Trucy yell from the entryway.
“How did it-” He stopped in his tracks, looking them over.
Hats were on their heads and scarves were bundled around their necks, so all was good there.
Jackets were buttoned. Cheeks were rosy.
Trucy was standing with gloves too large for her and Miles' hands were strikingly bare.
There it is.
"What happened to you guys?"
