    Pierre turned toward the door before Esteban could answer, his hand already grabbing the handle. For a moment he hesitated. Just a second.

    Something in his chest twisting painfully, like part of him wanted Esteban to say something - anything - that might stop him from walking away.

    But nothing came.

    So Pierre pulled the door open. “Sometimes,” he said finally, his voice hoarse now, “I wish I had never met you.”

    The door slammed shut behind him.
