Avery tries to turn left at the crossroads and D3rLord3 is there to meet him, wrapping a blindfold over his eyes mere moments before the King finds them. D3rLord3 is forced to take Avery to Carcosa where he tries his best to commit to two goals: (1) keep Avery's blindfold on, or make sure he doesn't see anything; and (2) get Avery to safety.
He succeeds on one of these things.

AveryTheMayo, or just Avery, traced the lines of the map with a trembling finger. Feeling an almost physical pull toward it. A magnetic tug that pressed against the inside of his chest. He imagined the floors, the corridors stretching into darkness. He couldn’t help but imagine the sterile fluorescent lights humming above.
“How am I going to do this…?” He said outloud.

The ritual didn’t fail. It just didn’t end.
D3rLrd3, or Derek survives, but not in any way that makes sense. Taken by the U.S Department of Metaphysical Sciences, he becomes something they cannot explain. Only contain.
Avery is the only one who notices, the evidence that Derek is still out there. Now he is on the run with someone who knows too much. Remembers things that haven’t happened yet, and isn’t entirely human anymore.
Retrieving him is the easy part.Understanding what came back isn’t. Derek knows how all of this ends.
