The warmth melted the frost clinging to Clark’s lashes, leaving faint traces of moisture at the corners of his eyes. Elisa could not tell whether they were droplets of water—or his tears.
Clark drew in a sharp breath. Then he rushed forward, throwing caution to the wind. The slick ground made him stumble, yet it only drove him to clutch the bewildered Bruce more fiercely, without reserve.
“Don’t leave me,” he pleaded, his fingers trembling as they traced Bruce’s cheekbones in a frantic search. “Don’t leave me again.”
