Summary
Castiel Novak is twenty-six years old when he's killed in the Civil War. The first soul to be laid to rest in the grounds of the new Lawrence Memorial Cemetery, his spirit remains in a liminal space—not in the living world, but not passing on, forever tasked with helping other spirits to go where he cannot.
His vigil over the grounds of his cemetery is a long and lonely one, unable to interact with anyone who still remains in the land of the living.
Until he meets Dean Winchester.

Summary
Castiel Novak can think of many writers who would not be welcome under the roof of Heaven’s Gate library, where he is the librarian: Ayn Rand ranks highly (no explanation needed), as does Charles Dickens (he hasn’t forgiven Charles for the month he lost to The Pickwick Papers). And, of course, Dean Winchester. Dean Winchester, local author and obvious a-hole, who is entirely too handsome to be true and who is clearly totally lacking in profundity, intelligence, sincerity, and self-awareness. Unfortunately, though, Dean’s been invited to do a book signing at Heaven’s Gate - and Castiel’s about to be confronted by some unexpected feelings when he finally meets Dean for the first time.

Summary
As a phlebotomist with the Red Cross, Castiel has donors, not patients, and given donation protocols spacing appointments out, it typically takes a year to call someone a regular. Castiel bonds with his coworkers instead, and he stays over with his best friend and godson almost as often as he goes home. There's little exciting in the day-to-day, but routine is no hardship.
A new part of that routine comes in the form of a talkative if nervous man named Dean, whose pulse races every time Castiel takes it. Dean often flushes and looks uncomfortable, although he covers it up with jokes, teasing, and a ready smile. It makes his consistent, fortnightly platelet donations all the more admirable, but for some reason, Dean only looks even more nervous whenever Castiel brings that up.

Summary

The Dean he finds there is battered, barely intact, but Castiel isn't about to let him go. Not without a fight.
