Peter doesn’t look back. His jaw tics, and his fingers shift slightly on the apple.
“No,” he says. “Just listening.”
The man hums, soft and low. Not mocking. More like agreement. “To what?”
Peter pauses.
He should deflect. Make a joke. Toss out something cynical. That’s usually how he plays this — distance over honesty. But the words don’t come this time.
So he just says, “The city.”
The man lets out a breath that might be a laugh. Or maybe just exhaustion.
“She’s cruel,” he says. “But honest.”

He turned, slow, to see the pool. The same pool he’d crawled out of. The glowing green surface rippled faintly from where he’d broken it, light spilling across the walls and ceiling like a warped reflection of water and fire. A sirens call of a photo to a photographer like Peter.
Fantastic. He’d just gone for a nice relaxing dip in the totally-not-evil vat of glowing ectoplasm. Great going, Parker. If this wasn’t the moment that finally turned him into a real spider-freak, he didn’t know what was.
