Summary
After being taken captive by the Greens, Jace heeded the promise he made to his mother to survive at all costs. He bent the knee and did what was necessary to stay in Aegon's favor. It worked; he is alive, his mother wears the crown, and the war is all but won. But Jace feels changed by all he's done to get to this point. His place as heir is even less secure than it ever was, threatened by more than only rumors, even if those around him are wilfully blind to it.
Aemond has given up all; his ambitions for the crown, his pride, and his freedom. It was no small thing to surrender to his half-sister, but he has seen what is to come and made his choice. There are threats still looming, within and without, and Aemond means to preserve the power of the House of the Dragon if no one else will, and watch over Jacaerys as he does.
Or Rhaenyra has claimed the Iron Throne, aided by the dragonriders she elevated. Aegon has vanished, Aemond is her captive, and her son returns to her changed, sullen and wilful.
