Summary
“Have you ever fallen in love?” Haewon asks, her voice surprisingly lacking its monotonous dryness.
Lily stiffens against her. Takes a moment. Another.
“No, I don’t think I ever have.”
“Do you want to?”
At the question, Lily looks up at her with a laugh, tapping the tip of her nose with a finger.
“I am love, silly. What kind of question is that?”
Haewon nods, somehow feeling dumber after the exchange. That wasn’t a no. She stares back ahead, ignoring the weight on her shoulder, and immersing herself back into the battle unfolding before her.
She thinks back to her first words to Lily, about how love and war are intertwined.
She’s always thought about how it would be like. To stand before your enemies, white knuckled grip on a dagger, fear masked as courage. It has to happen. It’s the only way it can happen.
“Do you think you ever will?”
Haewon looks back at her, gaze steady. Lily smiles.
“The universe is hardly properly designed,” she echoes Haewon’s words back at her wistfully. “But I suppose I have an eternity to find out, don’t I?”
