    Excerpt:

“Tell me where he is,” Severus whispers. “Tell me where he is and I'll do whatever you want.”

Dumbledore tilts his head. Seems genuinely perplexed. “Who, my dear boy?”

    “Remus Lupin.”

    ***

The temporary residence Dumbledore arranged for Lupin sits isolated on a cliffside overlooking the ocean, a three mile walk from the nearest town. The cottage is shabby in the distance as Severus’ fingers dig into his arms. He trudges towards it with too many words clawing for purchase in his throat.

The grass is yellowing with the coming winter, the sky a looming gray that doesn’t mock him like the brighter days do, the days that look too much like all the summer afternoons he spent at his childhood park, watching the clouds with Lily Evans.

The wind is wild and chilly, pulled in from that endless void of gray ocean calling to Severus like a remedy to his pain. Something that can envelop him in an embrace until the pain is gone.

He needs this pain gone. Needs it to intensify. Needs more and more until there’s nothing left of him and he finally gets what he deserves.

He doesn’t need to knock on the cottage door–Lupin is there, on the cliff’s edge beyond the structure, looking out into the ocean. His back is to Severus, he doesn’t seem to notice him over the crush of waves against the towering cliffside.

How serene. How quaint. How unfeeling. Like Lupin doesn’t even care. Like he’s lost nothing. Like a quiet existence and a nice view are something he’s allowed to have.

    He’s not.

    Neither is Severus.

But it’s cruel, so cruel of Dumbledore to punish Severus by keeping him at Hogwarts under observation. Like he’s some unhinged risk to himself and Remus Lupin is a good boy who can be left to his own devices.

Why is it always Severus who is the one who needs corralled and caged and controlled, while Potter and Black and Pettigrew and Lupin can do as they please?

It’s not until Severus gets closer that he realizes Lupin is looking down over the cliff’s edge.

    Down.

    Not out.

Down at the roiling waves. The jagged rocks. The seafoam.

    The drop.

It’s like looking into a mirror.

Severus’ stomach tightens at the unsettling image of twenty-one-year-old Remus Lupin with his hands in his pockets, staring passively down towards an eventuality he can never take back.

A surge of something like disgust crashes through Severus’ chest, his heart speeding sickeningly fast.

How dare he–how dare Albus Dumbledore leave Remus Lupin here to his own devices with temptation just outside his doorstep.

Severus bets Dumbledore didn’t even confiscate Lupin’s wand.

Dumbledore just–what? Looked at a twenty-one-year-old who just lost everything and abandoned him in this isolated place?

    Why?

Why when he has been so careful with Severus?

    Severus knows why.

    Dumbledore needs Severus.

    Summary

Remus stared at the letter for a moment, then read it again, just to be sure it was not his own wishful thinking that had forced insults into offerings. But no, it was just as it appeared. He found himself smiling, the lightest tug at cheek, despite the brusqueness of the letter, or perhaps because of it. Snape was nothing if not consistent.

And yet, he had offered to continue brewing the Wolfsbane Potion.

Of course, his method, and timing, of communication were formed as to never be forced to admit he was doing someone a favour. Such was the endless inconvenience of living as Severus Snape.

    Excerpt:

The owl glared. Remus glared back. An exchange of letter, nip, sigh, treat. And it was gone.

The envelope was plain and unmarked, save for his name scrawled across the front in a spiky, no-nonsense script that could only belong to one person. Remus sighed again, all trepidation and resignation, and opened the letter.

I will continue to brew the Potion, though I wish I could say I see no reason to subject myself to the inconvenience of your presence in order to deliver it, you have a history of wasting my good work.

You will meet me in Hogsmeade, the gully by the quill shop will suffice. Our usual time.

Be punctual. I do not tolerate lateness.

If you have any questions, refrain from asking them. There is no need to respond to this letter.

The offer itself was… well, unexpected.

It meant that, for all his snark and sniping, Snape hadn’t simply washed his hands of Lupin after his resignation.

Tenuous. Prickly. And yet. Lupin worried at chewed lip. They persisted.

The nominator wishes to nominate Part 1 of this series "Launch"

    Excerpt:

The goblet looked unappetising, puffing pungent blue smoke, and it had nothing on the face above it. The rancorous curl of Severus Snape’s lips around crooked, yellowed teeth could give a troll a run for its money.

“Thank you,” Remus said as pleasantly as possible, even as he longed to pick up the nearest quill and poke out both the man’s eyes. “I know it takes quite a lot of time and effort to brew this.”

“Perhaps as much time and effort as persuading a Boggart to dress me in women's clothing?” Severus’s mouth flattened so that he could hiss the words through clenched teeth; he drifted closer, goblet clutched to his robed chest. Remus rubbed his nose to stifle the smirk that the memory threatened.

“I don’t know why you’re so bothered by it. Green has always been your colour.”

Severus’s eyes flashed, but he said nothing, only extended his hands in stuttered motion. Remus took the goblet and peered down into the indigo depths. Against the chilled gold surface, his fingers tingled.

“I’ve waited years for this,” Remus said with a small laugh, “and now I’m terrified to drink it.”

“Lupin, quaking in his boots,” Severus sneered. “Some things never do change.”

Remus lifted the goblet and met the other man’s eyes as he drained it. God, it tasted awful—worse than the Firewhiskey shots Sirius used to pour down his throat—a hundred times worse—

Remus bit his tongue against the disgusted face he wanted to make and passed the empty goblet back.

“See you tomorrow,” he said to Severus’s back.

    Excerpt:

Black snorted. “Very romantic. No specifics then?”

Severus closed the book with a snap. “Do you require step-by-step instructions? Just go ahead and do it already. I bet you’re dying to get your hands on Lupin.”

Black fixed Severus with a shrewd look. “What’s your rush, are you that eager to watch?”

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Severus replied. “I just want to get out of here. You’ll use Muffliato on me and I’ll turn away.”

Black considered the idea for a moment. “What do you think?” he asked Lupin.

“It seems like a serviceable plan.” Lupin shrugged his shoulders. “I’d rather not think too much, to be honest. If you all consent then let’s go through with it.”

“A serviceable plan.” There was no inflection in Black’s tone. He pursed his lips. “We can figure something else out. Maybe Snape and I can fuck,” he suggested as if it had only just occurred to him.

“No,” Severus said instantly. “I’m not touching you with a ten-foot broomstick.”

“And why not? Remus and I are friends whereas you and I have nothing to lose.” Black raised his thumb. “We’re both inclined that way, whereas Remus tends to go for women.” He raised his index finger. “I hear hate-fucking can be fun.” He raised his middle finger and grinned.

“Lupin is not-” Severus started but Lupin threw him a warning glance that made him pause. Black was evidently unaware that some months after McKinnon’s death, Lupin had fallen into Severus’ bed in search of comfort from someone who wouldn’t look at him with pity. They’d kept it going for a while but Severus had ended things abruptly upon noticing Black’s little crush, figuring the two would soon end up together. “Lupin can make his own decisions.”
