Summary
Xie Lian was what people would call weird for paying for innocuous services at a brothel rather than an inn, because if he could afford tea and a table, shouldn’t he prefer a place without any sexual proclivities? But the best part about visiting brothels was that no one would ever recognize him if they were looking! Xie Lian would never be caught dead in one of those establishments, right? And when he was injured, as he often was, waiting to feel better was easier when he could listen to gentle music in a warmly atmosphere!
Yes, the atmosphere was designed to lure men into beds! No, Xie Lian didn’t want a bed or anything like that! He wanted tea, a small table in the corner of whatever room the singers were performing in, and something to lean on as his vision spun from the aftermath of falling off a cliff! Funnily enough, while no one had ever sought him out before—nor did he drink in these places—there was a first time for everything!
Why was there a youth at his table looking at him like that?
(or: xie lian frequents brothels, which would definitely be a shock to anyone who once knew him. similarly, he’s frequently injured. these things occur simultaneously more often than not!)

Xie Lian blinked as the blinding light faded and his feet touched the ground again. He didn’t stumble despite the amount of disorientation filling his every being. It wasn’t just confusion, but also dread, nausea and agony.
“San Lang…?” he called out helplessly, his heart aching to be back in Hua Cheng’s safe and loving arms. But he knew it was a futile attempt. His beloved wasn’t here – his embrace couldn’t save him now.
All before him were just tall, beautiful buildings, unfamiliar faces staring with shocked, displeased expressions and total silence. No maple-red robes, no teasing smirks and no one-eyed gazes full of adoration.
He had ascended once again.

"Yeah, for now," Shi Qingxuan appeared oblivious to Xie Lian's shock, doubling down, "When are you going to ask him out, anyway? Or are you hoping he'll make the first move? Because I totally understand wanting him to ask you, but sometimes you just have to risk the rejection to get what you want."
"Qingxuan," Xie Lian said their name sternly, hoping to make them stop before they made this any more awkward than it already was, "I'm straight, okay?"
