Summary
“This is the shirt you were wearing in the gym that day. When I gave you back your ring.” He traces her ring finger absently.
“You told me I was a survivor,” Lucy remembers, “That I had the whole rest of my life ahead of me. That was the first day I started to believe it.”
Tim hums, leaning his forehead down against hers.
“Can I tell you something vulnerable?” he asks.

Just a lil post-ep something for 8x03, because domestic Chenford is everything and I loved the DOD throwback but wish we’d gotten just the tiniest bit more :’)
Wrote this at 2am with no editing, so forgive any mistakes! 🤪
(Title from “Forever After All” by Luke Combs bc that and “Love You Anyway” are my current chenford anthems)

Summary
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” he says, holding it to her. She reaches out to take it from him, her face doing that adorable surprised look he adores.
“I thought we agreed no presents, just being together,” she says, a hint of a whine in her voice.
“Oh please, like I believe that you, Lucy Chen, stuck to that,” he retorts, and her face immediately breaks into a mischievous grin. His voice gets softer. “Open it, sweetheart.”

Summary
For a second he can’t remember to breathe, let alone talk.
It’s Tamara’s giggle behind him that wakes him up.
“Hi,” he finally returns, his face breaking out in a smile even though he knows it must be halfway to beet-red. “You…you look beautiful.”

Summary
“I took the sergeant position in Hollywood. The one I didn’t take…last year.”
When I wasn’t finished training you yet.
He didn’t say it, but she heard the words echoing through her mind anyway.
Shock gave way to anger. She stepped another step closer to him, her face screwed up as she looked up at him in what could rightfully be called fury. “Why the hell would you do that? Why the hell would you just up and leave now?” -

Summary
Lucy’s head drops back to the bed and he thinks she must’ve been up all night worrying about him if she’s still this tired.
“If you won’t go home and rest, at least get some rest here, okay? The couch folds out. I’m good,” he tells her softly.
She studies his face and then nods silently.
His eyelids have been getting heavy since the medicine hit his bloodstream and he knows he’s seconds from sleep, too.
He pulls their hands up to his chest and rests them there against the steady thumping of his heart.
His eyes close but his fingers tighten even more around hers for a second and he feels her squeeze back.
“I’m glad you’re here,” he whispers.

Summary
The skin under his eye had gone dark and ugly, a bloom of violet and blue spreading across the hard plane of his cheekbone. The split at his upper lip was red and angry, the bruise on his other cheek shadowing half his face in a way that should have made him look rougher than he already did and somehow only made him look more painfully, unfairly handsome.
She wanted to fix all the hurt on his face, sure, but a darker, more selfish part of her liked the way he looked ruined for her. It was a messy, vibrating kind of love.

Summary
The uniform worked like an architect, rebuilding him in right angles. It mapped out the geography of his shoulders with a cruel, buttoned-down precision that made her throat dry.

Summary
She can’t breathe.
She can’t, she can’t, she can’t.
“Lucy.” His voice comes out strangled, like it pains him to even speak.
She wonders, for an instant, if Martin felt the same way.
Another sob rips through her chest, taking her soul with it. It hurts, everything hurts, and she doesn’t know how she can continue to live like this.

Summary
“Miles said you seemed to know the woman,” Lucy says, placing a hand over his.
Tim pauses.
Know is a strong word. One that he isn’t sure applies here.
He knew her, once. A long time ago. She cooked him dinner and bought him and Genny ice cream in the park and silently handed him ice packs when his bruises looked particularly bad. He kissed her cheek after she dropped him off at football practice and promised her it was okay as she drove him to the emergency room with a broken rib—even listened when she suggested he tell them he’d tripped down the stairs.
But nothing good lasts in a house like that.

Summary
His heart shatters when Lucy covers her face with her hands, anguished cries echoing off the walls. The sound rips straight through him, and Tim almost says fuck protocol, wanting to pull her in and hold her close.
But all too soon he’s thinking of the microscope they’re about to be put under—how the brass will be looking at every second of this through the tightest lens, ensuring the integrity of the investigation isn’t compromised by their relationship.
So, forcing himself to take a deep breath, Tim tears his eyes from Lucy and pulls the wall up.
