JJ didn't think the others saw it. Hayden, maybe, but Jackie was the only WAGs's name Shane had committed to memory so Hayden never brought it up. JJ didn't have a wife or girlfriend. He had his hookups and the names of the best restaurants in each city they player in. If JJ had a dog, Shane would probably mix its name up with Drapeau's. The others didn't get that however pathetic or sad they might think Shane, Shane thought the same of them tenfold when they missed shots at practice or ate fast food on weekdays. Shane wasn't being prissy or funny when he said, don't embarass me—JJ still doesn't know exactly what it was, but he doesn't care to find out.
Shane had poured everything into his team (possessively: it was his team) and he asked them to give it back that day, so they delivered. When Shane smiled at them afterwards, it felt like love.

Summary
Shane Hollander has never missed a practice, never taken a bad penalty, never once failed to submit a color-coded self-assessment on time. He eats brown rice and broccoli by choice. He is, by any reasonable measure, fine.
The Montreal Metros recruitment team disagrees. But whatever's wrong with him can probably be fixed with the right coaching and a few weeks at an elite mental conditioning camp.
What he finds at Camp Straight Edge is a group of new friends with similar struggles, one Russian junior champion who finds the whole situation endlessly amusing, and the slow realization that the problem they're trying to fix might not be a problem at all.

Ilya Rozanov: Junior, 21, player for the Boston University Terriers, and majoring in finance.
Shane and Ilya work well together on the ice, but there is no confusion that they aren't fans of each other. Shane is constantly fed up with Ilya showing up late and not taking things as seriously as him. Ilya likes to tease him, but he always puts his all in during games. It’s been like this since they started two and half year ago.
Midway through the fall semester, Ilya takes a bad hit and is taken off the ice during the game. Shane comes up with an unorthodox solution to fulfill Ilya's physical needs while he recovers, and Shane's academic needs for extra credit.
