Summary
Athena has always told the mortals under her tutelage that in the midst of battle, pain should be disregarded. Push it aside, she’s always said. Turn off the part of you that hurts. Find a place beyond it and stay there. But she’s not currently in battle, and she’s certainly never advocated for ignoring wounds after the fact. For mortals, that’s a one-way passage to blood loss, infection and death — not necessarily in that order.
Yet Athena is not mortal, and she’s not technically wounded. Her burns have sealed up, leaving thick, uneven wads of scar tissue in their wake. They make her skin feel tight and sometimes they itch, but they are not open wounds. She’s not bleeding. Her insides are not exposed to the air. It all just hurts.

More than three months after the events of God Games, Athena's scars flare up, leaving her with little choice but to come to terms with the long-term effects of her injuries.
