Kate has always been the one to provide for her family. When Edwina excitedly tells her Bagwell wants to offer for her, Kate knows it's up to her to marry well and secure her family's future.
Anthony has always been clear that he wants a loveless marriage. So when Kate has an intriguing proposition for him, he doesn't immediately discount it.

So the priest repeats the question, and Anthony’s confusion only grows.
“Kathani Grace Sharma, do you take Lord Anthony Edmund Bridgerton to be your lawfully wedded husband?”
The question hangs like a sentence over Kate's head.
Last night... when she went to surprise him, at his bachelor party, and then she listened to those abhorrent words... to what came out of his mouth... when she understood...
She tilts her head, trying to dispel this trail of thoughts, for the countless time.
Regardless of what she's heard, marrying him was still what was best for her, and for everyone else.
She looks at Edwina and Mary looking at her with concern, and Kate tries to focus on them, and prioritize them, as well as her duty, as she always did, but, she can’t this time.
She doesn't know what makes her say the words to him, instead of them, especially after last night, of what she heard, but he's the one who she whispers to, woefully. “I am so sorry.”
And the next thing Kate knows, she's grabbing the skirt of her dress in her hands, before she runs off through the central aisle of the cathedral.

Summary
Kate leaves for India. Anthony follows, Colin in tow. It goes terribly wrong – and somehow also terribly right.
"Good God, are you duelling again?” asked Colin. “No, wait—" He shut the door. "What has Eloise done now?"
"It's Anthony," said Benedict gleefully. "He's going on a romantic quest across the seas in search of his viscountess!"
Colin’s face lit up. “Anthony, abroad? All in the name of duty, I suppose?”
Anthony rubbed his temple as Benedict poured for Colin.
“How marvellous. I quite approve,” Colin continued. “Did no English ladies meet your lofty standards, that you must search on foreign shores?”
“No, brother,” said Benedict. “He seeks a particular lady who set sail from London this morning—no doubt to get away from the esteemed viscount who nearly married her sister and almost ruined both our families.”
Anthony took a large sip of brandy as he watched Colin do the arithmetic in his head.
“Miss Sharma? She is returning to India?”
“Left this morning,” said Benedict.
“And I am going after her.” Anthony's empty hand touched his watch as he thought about all the time he couldn't waste. “There’s nothing else to be done.”
