Summary
Ever since Sarah... well, ever since Sarah ten years ago, Joel's stayed as far away from kids as he can. Just the sight of one is practically enough to send him into a panic attack.
But then Tommy signs them up for a contracting job at a high school as a favor to an old army buddy.
And then there's a little girl in the front office, who somehow appears in the coffee shop Joel visits because the motel's coffee machine is shit.
Most damning is when Joel goes in to do some work at three in the morning and that same goddamn little girl is asleep in his construction zone and, when he wakes her up, says she's homeless.
Next thing he knows, she's asleep in his motel bed and he's filing foster parent paperwork.
What the fuck just happened?

Summary
“Does the name Anna Williams sound familiar to you?”
“No.”
“Okay. Let me ask instead then.” Marlene held on for one more moment, before she finally spat it out almost too quickly. “Do you still remember about a woman with red hair, being in her mid-thirties, you have met at a pub one night back then in November 2010?”
And suddenly it hit Joel like a hard slap right into his face.
“Anna Williams has died of an overdose three weeks ago. She.. I mean, you have a daughter together.”
Or: Joel finds out about having a thirteen year old daughter he hasn't known anything about. He agrees to let Ellie live with him together on his sheep ranch, until Marlene will find a foster family for her. Of course, with time passing and getting to know each other he grows fond of the little girl. Will Joel still let her go in the end?
