Summary
She’d heard rumors of werewolf trafficking, of course, everyone had. It’s the sort of thing that makes Lilia clench her fists over the morning news, gripping her mug until Jen has to pry her fingers apart. Still, for most of her life, it’s only been a story in the paper. This is a person right in front of their eyes, shackled to the wall by a chain around her throat like a wild animal.
“Our prize fighter,” the witch calls from behind them. Jen doesn’t need to turn to see that she’s smirking. “Pretty little thing, isn’t she? She’s a purebred, too, not a mutt or a turncoat.”
Lilia’s eyes go wide, shooting her lover a look of pure disgust. Jen nods, but squeezes her wrist firmly in warning. They’ve known each other for long enough now that she doesn’t need words to convey her message, simply a touch and a gaze.
I hate this as much as you do, my love. But don’t start a fight here, not when there’s no possible way for us to win.
