Strong negative emotions were the only way to free him from the spores, and Kirk couldn’t think of anything else to do but make him angry. If that was what it would take to get the real Spock back, Kirk would do it.
Or, what if the spores in the This Side of Paradise made Spock realize he was in love with Kirk rather than Leila Kalomi?
