Arthur's eyes widen minutely, and Merlin can see fists tighten by his side, but he doesn't move out of Merlin's grasp, doesn't show any other reaction. And Merlin has never touched Arthur like this, never so unkindly but he's reached a boiling point, the thought of carrying on with this thankless routine is agonising.
His voice is almost a whisper when he speaks next. He leans in closer, unable to look at Arthur anymore, instead he says his next words a breath away from his ear. "You could thank me on your knees and it wouldn't come anywhere close to adequate appreciation."

In which Merlin is overwhelmed and underappreciated. Stretched thin between keeping the kingdom safe, playing the role of Arthur’s servant as well as the role of Gaius’ apprentice, and dealing with his magic, he snaps and quits.
