“How’ve you been? I know we haven’t seen each other much.” Scott looked at him carefully, but not critically. It felt dissonant with everything else.
Who’s fault is that?
“Fine. I suppose like you, not bad but not great. Just making it work for the moment.”
Scott’s eyes went flinty for a moment before flickering with pain.

Summary
He tried. He tried so hard to stay distant. He didn’t want to settle down, he didn’t want to love again. Attachment made him vulnerable; letting people into his heart opened them both up for pain, and he didn’t want to endure that again.
But they were worth it. God, his family was worth it. He would do anything for them, and he knew they would do the same.
But hopefully it wouldn’t come to that.
