“I have… Been through a lot.”
Lumine frowned. “‘A lot’ seems to be a gross understatement. You’re like a walking ball of trauma. Being enslaved and tortured for decades and then losing your whole family and then fighting this endless war, alone, seems to qualify as more than ‘a lot.’ Maybe more like 'constant suffering.'”
“I have a contract, and it’s my duty and my honor to fulfill that contract. Even now that you defeated Osial, it’s still my job to defend Liyue from the demons that plague it.” Xiao rubbed his Vision between two fingers. “I’m the last defender in this invisible war.”
“Hm.” Lumine sighed and rested her chin on her palm, looking up at Xiao with big honey-yellow eyes. “Then who will defend you?”

Summary
He couldn’t blink away his fading vision.
But he couldn’t die here.
He couldn’t.
A voice whispered at the edges of his mind, vision tunneling.
“If you awake to a knife at your throat, if monsters dig their claws into you, if death comes knocking at your door, call out my name. Adeptus Xiao. I will be here when you call.”
Aether’s lips moved, and one would think he was uttering a silent prayer before drawing his final breath. A weak puff of frost was the only indication of a spoken word. For a moment, nothing happened. Aether’s strength left him, and he hung limply in the monster’s iron grip. He felt himself lifted higher, and the fingers fell away. He was flying, thrown like a pebble. He closed his eyes for the executing impact, but he never met the unyielding ruin walls.

“Surely you aren’t too exhausted darling? One more excursion won’t hurt!” Lisa chimed in, clapping her hands, “No one else here is up for it. You’ve defeated Stormterror, what’s one little mage?” Lisa laughed, nursing the cup of wine in her hands.
What’s one little Abyss Mage?
Aether stared hard at her, in disbelieving shock. Was that all he was to them? Someone to take care of their orders?
Something anew stirred in the pit of his stomach.
Or where commission after commission, Aether's body soon grew tired of the multiple excursions. It seemed that all anyone ever wanted from him was to do their dirty work for them. His usual cheerful demeanor vanished before he fled Mondstadt, looking for some sort of escape, and eventually finding it in a certain Adeptus.
