Memories of his mother surfaced unbidden, fleeting and bittersweet. He remembered how she used to run her fingers through his hair when he was a child, her touch gentle and comforting. He remembered how safe he had felt in those moments, how the world seemed less frightening with her there.
The thought made his chest ache, a dull, familiar pain that he had grown used to over the years. But as he sat there, his hand still tangled in Sakura’s hair, the ache didn’t feel as sharp.
