The gun trembled in his brother’s hand as they kept staring at each other, the words almost as pleading as Ilya’s own. If his eyes hadn’t started to sting, he might have seen his brother’s well up as well. Instead, that childish, naive little part of his heart spoke the next words out of his mouth.
"We are family Alexei. We always have been."

"Have they said anything to you? Asked you? About us?" Shane asked. He seemed surprisingly calm.
Ilya shook his head. "No. I told Wiebe I would not be playing. He did not ask why. But said it was okay. Haas asked how it was going. Troy messaged and asked how you are feeling."
Ilya still didn't know how Troy had figured it out. But with his performance it couldn't have been hard.
Ilya could see the muscles in Shanes jaw tick, his own lip caught between his teeth. A breath rushed out of Shanes nose, almost a snort.
"Okay."
"Okay?"
Shane nodded. "Okay."
Or: Ilya freaked out after the Metros plane had gone down. His team had noticed... had maybe pieced some things together. Maybe it's time to be honest?

Shane scratched the back of his neck. “Rose, uh… she figured it out. Us. Our history. All of it.”
Ilya turned his head slowly, disbelieving. “Figured it out?”
“To be fair, you and I weren’t exactly subtle in Montreal,” Shane said, sheepishly.
Ilya huffed, scowling.
“So, she knows.” He swallowed. “Everything?”
“I mean, not all the gory details,” Shane said, shrugging. “But enough.”
There was a pause long enough for the surf to swell and retreat twice.
“And? What?” Ilya asked finally, jaw tight. “She is… disgusted?”
Shane actually snorted. “Uh. No.”
“No?”
“No,” Shane said again, dragging a hand down his face. Then, half-laughing, “She, um. She thinks it’s fucking hot.”
