Charlie tugged on Nick’s sleeve. “Are you sure you should be playing?” he asked in a low voice. “You sound awful.”
Nick rubbed his eyes. “I—”
“He’s fine,” said Harry, ploughing between them with all the courtesy of a sledgehammer. He slapped Nick’s back cheerfully. Nick stumbled under the impact, pressing a fist to his mouth to keep from coughing again. Seemingly oblivious, Harry added, “It’s just man flu innit. You can still throw a ball, can’t you Nick?”
“Yeah,” Nick said, grimacing. “I’m still good to play.”
After their last match is cut short by the weather, the Truham rugby team are up against St John’s for a second time. They’re determined to be at the top of their game. Except, struck down with a heavy, miserable cold, Nick’s feeling far from it.
When he insists on playing anyway, Charlie assumes it’s the idiot rugby lad in him. But what if there’s another reason?
